I just semi-rebuilt an 86 325e m20. Took the engine apart - all but took the head off. New gaskets, head bolts and hoses. Cleaned injectors and new filters. The full monty. Prior symptoms were high idle at cold and surging high to higher when warm. Now it runs smooth but about 2500rpm. Swapped ICV with old one from savage and the idle did come down to around 1250-1500.
However, when I plug the air hose running from intake boot to ICV and where it attaches to the boot, the rpms come down to around 850 and the car runs very smooth. Questions:
1. Can I get along without the ICV and air tube running from intake boot and ICV?
2. Now that I have isolated or improved the idle with plugging the boot and air hose, what does this suggest for further investigation.
3. Would a new ICV valve perhaps correct things further. I do get a response from each (old and original) ICV when I turn the screw.
4. Would this happening point at all to an TPS issue. I think it may be on the fritz after testing but will be reconfirming this evening
Your thoughts are appreciated
