m62 camshaft position sensor

Hello all,

I have a 99 740iL with 173k miles and the m62tu engine. Recently, the timing chain guides went out. So, I bought the parts, rented the special tools, and spent forever replacing the guides, OSV, water pump, seals, etc.

Now I'm getting an error code saying the camshaft position sensor for cylinders 1-4 isn't working. I replaced the sensor, cleared the codes, and same code came back. Then I switched the 1-4 and 5-8 sensors, but the code remained the same. I looked and cleaned the sensor connections as well. So, doesn't appear to actually be an issue with the sensor at all.

The symptom that I get is a rough idle. Anything above roughly 800rpms and it runs nice and smooth. I followed the procedure for setting timing the camshaft, so I don't think that's the problem. Also, if it were a timing issue, I *think* it would be an issue at all rpms, but I'm not sure about that.

I'm not sure what else to try. Anybody have any ideas for me. I *really* don't want to tear the front of the engine apart again :\

Thanks,

Joe
