Wrecked my E36... Fixable??

Well I sure did it this time... Spun it hard into the guard rail after hitting ice on a left hand sweeper.

I've made the decision to fix it if it can be done properly.

For those who are knowledgeable with bodywork, I'm wondering what you think of my situation. At the very least I know I'm going to need the fender, hood, nose panel, headlights, grills, and some plastic in the engine bay. The bumper is a toss up, it's pretty beat cosmetically but structurally it seems OK. The radiator probably needs to be replaced, but I couldn't get the hood open so I don't know. The suspension looks alright too - I don't think it took the brunt of the hit, because of the way the guard rail is designed and with the car being lowered it seems as though the car hit on the same plane as the headlights. The frame rail looks entirely straight and the bumper support wasn't compressed. What worries me is if the strut tower is bent, and it looked like it was.

Is there any hope? I got this car 4 years ago when I was 16, and I would hate to have to get rid of it.

It pays (I mean, I pay) to be honest in CA

I finally got around to getting my car registered today. 31 days after taking delivery. Did all the right stuff, good smog check, clean title, honest about the price I paid on the bill of sale, honest about the date I took delivery. I knew the joy of 9.25% tax was looming. When the nice gentleman rang up my bill, he said there was $250 in late charges because I waited longer than 20 days to get the registration done :bawl Yikes, $1,832 later and I'm legal in CA!

Just had to share my pain...

What I learned by driving 12 miles with no Fan belt.

Well this is what happened. driving along slowly just turning been hearing a high pitched win last 30 seconds. Turn then go straight I hear a typical fan belt breaking noise everything on dash lights up but still have power brakes and steering. Then the power steering immediately goes away.

Stop get out sure enough belt is toast and the lower pulley has dropped off but I can reach down and get it but it is shot. The belt nicely unwinds itself.

I start calling around and find a dealer in Indiana that says he has the parts. But there is confusion between the M60 and M62. So long story short get a belt that is too long and the full belt tensioner system less the spring loaded tensioner. fedx sat deliver ouch..

GO to hardware store get tools and put new double pulley on with the the new bracket. And I did this with the fan on but it would of been easier to take it off. But i was four hours from home with no tools.

The new belt is too long. As I had carefully drove the car once 1 mile and then 2 miles I thought I had a plan.

The plan was to get the car up to speed shift into neutral (auto) and shut if off. Put the heat on max with the fan on max and hopefully the AUXWP would circulate water through the heater core and the block. Had about 8 miles to get to auto parts store.

First NO PS at all. Then NO PB at all and the brakes are not like manual brakes they are like no brakes. The car never went over the normal center needle position till late in the run then it went over it by just a little.

I was glad I had two new batteries. I also was glad to have the AUXWP. I will keep a replacement belt on board and the tools and do a PM on those pulleys at 100,000 miles. The pentosin which I had just changed and put 1/2" below top overflowed. So I would say more like 1 inch below top is better.

Tools needed were 3/8 drive with a 13mm 12 point socket. and for new bolts with new system 3/8 drive and T-50 torx.

The fan belt is a seven grove but you can use a 6 grove as a get home. Went 200 miles four hours NBD.

OAT was 64 degrees.FYI

And once again CHillax helped by posting on here asking for help for me which several chimed in to help. So a big thank you to everyone!

FSU prob dead... any brand tips? Any lazy blower fuse tricks?

So suddenly in the midst of a cold snap of course blower motor stops working entirely today.

Assume its the FSU. Pull it out and find what appears to be a Sitronic from 08, so orig owner of the car must have gotten 6yrs out of the original, then this ones been cranking along for 6yrs or so... makes sense.

The dealer part looks to be $100+... aftermarket half-that...

Anybody got any update on brands that are good/bad/indifferent for replacements?

Any suggestions on lazy-man tricks to pulling the blower fuse without taking the glovebox out? Would like to just check that looks OK while I'm at it... I can almost finger tip it but not quite...

E36 Radio Wiring Issue

I bought a '99 M3 this summer and the front tweeter and midrange speakers were making really bad crackling sounds so I assumed they were just old/blown. I replaced them with Bavsound speakers and they were working great for about a month, but now both those speakers in the door are starting to make the same sound but much less pronounced. Almost like they're gradually going out. Not really experienced with wiring issues/diagnostics - at first I just assumed one of the speakers was a dud, but now they're both making the sound so I'm assuming its a wiring issues. Anyone have thoughts on where to diagnose the issue or had similar problems? Looked around the forum for a similar thread - if anyone knows of one, please send it my way. Thanks.

Vibration/pulling persists after hub centric rings

Hey everybody, thanks for taking the time to lend a hand with my little issue. I have a 2001 325i

A while back I bought some rims on craigslist that were off an e39 and put them on. Being also 16", I just swapped tires from my old rims, to these. After install, I had vibration and a pull, and before the install, the car drove like a dream! After research, turns out center bore was different, so I bought aluminum hub rings to get the hub to 74.1. After that, it was a lot better, but still a pull and vibration, just at higher speeds. Keep in mind ive had my wheels balanced twice now.

So I bought another set from different supplier, and put them on. Now its way better, brake pulsatiobpulsation gone, but still an annoying pull above 40mph and vibration around 75mph.

Now, what the heck am I doing wrong here? It seems hard to install these rings wrong...and the car never did this before. I Really like how these rims look on this car, but if putting the old ones back is the only option, then I will. First, I wanted to get some input from you guys. Could the actual rims themselves be the issue, and not the fitment?

Let me know, thank you!!!

Looking for a good service specialist in the bay area.

I have a 2011 528i that I love dearly. My 4 year maintenance program is up. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good place to get your car serviced thats cheaper than the dealer? Basically looking for someone who will be honest about what really needs to get done and what can wait and then provide quality work at a fair price.

Radio station change after shut off

Tried a search, didn't find anything, sorry if I missed this somewhere.

So, not always, but starting last week for 1 day and today when I started up my car the station on the radio that was playing when I stopped the car the night before had been changed. Now, I haven't lost my presets. Nor was it the default 87.1 that new radios come with. Instead it was tuned to an ethic station in the area (which isn't a bad station, I even added it to one of my presets). The station is at 96.1

Presumably there some item that the car radio is picking up that is changing it's station even while it's off?

2jz E30 swap questions for a newbie

New to the forum, not cars. Done a couple Subaru swaps, RSTi build, WRX build & 2 rallycross builds. I'm wanting to start another project. I want something scary & fun that I wont be able to keep straight. I've always loved E30's & I've always loved 2JZ's. I'm considering selling my WRX to fund this project. I could probably get around $8500 for my WRX. Is this a pretty solid budget for this kind of build?

-I found several E30's on craigslist near me for around $1k-$2k.

-eGay or maybe another engine importer would be the source for a 2JZ/tranny.

-My Dad & I own a little auto shop with a hoist & every tool you could need so that's no problem.

-Wiring - one of my 2 concerns. How does this work? For my RSTi, I had my RS harness merged to my STi harness. Do they make kits? Plug & play??

-Tuning - my other concern. I've always had a local come tune my Subaru's. What are my options as far as tuning the engine goes?

-With tuning, I'd like to run single turbo, injectors, fuel pump, exhaust, intake

-I'm located near Fort Wayne Indiana if that helps any

I've done some good researching over the past couple of days & found some good info but not everything I'd like to help with this swap if I do it. Just would like a lot of input, advice & any helpful links. Thanks!!

Wheelaholics checking in 👍

Hello everyone,

My name is Scott and I own a 2000 BMW 323i. I picked up this car for $700 due to someone's Ex girlfriend having anger issues. It was pretty beat up so I thought to my self "I'm going to have fun with this one". Many will not like my build and that is fine. We are all entitled to our own opinions. I am building this car for ME and no one else. My objective is to be different than everyone else. Please feel free to leave comments or ask questions an I will do my best to answer them. I am very thick skinned and understand sarcasm VERY well. But remember everyone, we are all adults here. I'll post up more pictures as I get them. Feel free to follow me on Facebook, or Instagram under the same username. I look forward to learning a little more on here.

Alternator Questions: 80 vs 120amp/Valeo vs Bosch

Hey all,

This fall my alternator seized up and i ended up picking up a Junk yard one and swapping it in. Easy process and no issues.

My girlfriends e36 has a bad alternator as well and now i have some questions. I haven't pulled hers out yet but I would assume its the same as mine which was an 80amp valeo (Both cars are 95 325is with hers being auto and mine 5sp) Will be pulling in the AM

-Are the Valeo and Bosch alternator pulleys offset differently or can i swap in a Bosch in an originally Valeo application or vice versa? I did some searching and people tend to have a ton of different info.

-Could I swap in a 120amp alternator (if hers is an 80amp) into her car or would it overcharge the battery etc?

Just trying to make things easier when I pick it up in the morning incase its a different brand or amperage. 60$ with a warranty is pretty good for me. Plus I'd rather not deal with a Autozone, O'reilly, Sanel, Advance shit brand or pay top dollar for a reman.

Check Brake Lights Warning (and unrelated low coolant warning?)

Started intermittently and has become almost every time I start the car. All brake lights are functional including center light. All bulbs are proper and good condition and I can't find any issue with grounding/melting/otherwise failing housings. Does the e39 suffer from the old pedal sensor failure that other models did? Other thoughts on what could be causing this? Google seems to say not.

Also still got the issue where my cooling system is building up a vacuum/air bubble of sorts if anyone has furher thoughts. Parts are OE, bout three years old, no leaks or loss of fluid, but I get low coolant warnings. Opening expansion tank it appears to be low, but as soon as I open the bleeder screw coolant flows back in and it levels out perfectly.

The joys of a 250k car I guess!

Intermittent Driving Problem

I have a 2000 323i that has an intermittent driving problem. Sometimes when I start it up I get no SES or other lights and the car drives fine. Other times I start it and the SES and EML lights come on the car drives in limp mode, but is drivable as long as I don't go aver 50 mph. Occasionally, when it goes into limp mode it runs, but it is not drivable. I ran some errands today and about 1 mile from the house the car goes into limp mode where it is not drivable. I turned the engine on and off several times and eventually it went into the drivable limp mode. I arrived at my destination and about an hour later I got back into the car and everything was normal with no drivability issues. I made several more stops and never had an issue the rest of the day. My codes are F6 (Secondary Air System Flow to Low); 44 (Evap System, Purge Control Circuit); A9 (Motorized Throttle (MDK) Final Stage Failure); 6F (Pedal Sensor (PWG) Potentimeter#2); AC (Pedal Sensor (PWG) Short Between Potentimeter) and A6 (I cannot find an explanation of this code). Is there something in these codes that suggest something in particular or a combination of things? Also, does the fact that the codes are intermittent suggest a particular problem that needs attention. Any help would be appreciated.

'89 750iL 12 Cylinder Beast, backfires frequently.

Hey guys, I just picked up a beautiful black 750iL. 105,822 miles on it. A couple issues, looking for some help. First of all the car backfires quite frequently. I read it'll do that from the ASC but as far as I have read, ASC wasn't equipped until 1990 models and up. A buddy of mine says the timing is off, which I thought was impossible because I read that the timing is electronically controlled. Other than that, she needs new plugs, fuel tank sending unit, and a transmission filter change. If I could get any help, that'd be great guys.

The B12 showed up under the cover of darkness. It was raining cats and dogs when it came, but the delivery truck had a factory Porsche that had to get to Daytona by 8 the next morning for the track. Reliable did a great job of bringing the car from the BMW Foundation where it went on disply after the Zentrum. The driver was so appologetic that it got wet when he unloaded it. I told him it was OK and not to worry about it.

97 840ci 3.64 diff swap/ tranny questions?

I have a 97 840ci that I swapped a 3.64 diff into. Wow, what a big difference! I love the power of the diff, but it feels like my tranny shift points could be improved a bit to take full advantage of the new diff ratio. Also, my triptronic function no longer works after the swap. Here are my questions....

1.Is there anything I can do to adjust my tranny's shift points, or make it better with the new diff ratio?

2.Does anyone have any recommendations on a software/ tune that I can use for the transmission?

3.Is the Dinan tranny software my best option & if so what can I expect from using it?

4.Is it possible to keep the triptronic function with the 3.64 diff? Did I miss something with the install?

I'd love to hear from others with the same diff. As always I greatly appreciate the help and info from other owners!

F10 facelift - inner air circulation is not working

The inner air circulation in manual mode is not working (AC is set off) in my F10 (BMW 520i) facelift model. I sent it back to the BMW service to repair this problem. They tried to fix it, but it’s still the same, it’s not working. Service said that this feature is not working at BMW 5ers and my nose is too sensitive :), and it's normal that BMW 5 series’s inner air circulation can’t be switched on properly, it will let slight outside air in all time (in manual mode). I also tested other facelift F10 models and experienced the same problem.

BUT: I tested a 2012 F10 BMW (model before the facelift) and the manual inner air circulation did work! So there’s a problem only with the facelift models.

Any suggestions what to do, because service doesn't care with this issue any more?

Thank you

E36 aFe 3" intake w/ pro 5r

Trying to get rid of my 3" afe intake w/ pro 5r filter & heat shield + heat shield mounting hardware.

Fits on all I6 e36s i believe.

Only have one bolt+nut holding the intake tube to heat shield but it hasn't failed me for the 2000 miles I've used it. No IAT mounting hardware either but i never put it in the heat shield anyway. Thats all it came with when i bought it from turner as an open package that was returned due to a scratch on the heat shield which i still have never found. I also took a razor blade and shaved a few strands of plastic out of the intake tube to make the maf a bit easier to get in, but i just put a hose clamp on the end and it actually tightened up a lot , so ill include that clamp with sale as well.

Going to clean up the heat shield later tonight and post pics but looking to get $225 shipped or $200 if you're close to / live on Long Island and want to pick it up. Everything works fine and i love the intake, but the i just need to use the money from this for another aFe intake, just 3.5"

As the title says, my traction control light doesn't work. Every search leads to issues with the light on, but nothing about it staying off. Traction control does work and I can disable it by clicking the button, but there's no indication when it's on or off.

Is there a bulb that needs to be replaced or is it sensor related? If it's a bulb replacement, how do I access it?

Spax Adjustable Dampers: where to buy?

Hi all,

I recently scrapped the idea of buying a third car in favor of building my E21 as a dual purpose rally-x/HPDE car. I just bought two sets of springs and a coilover conversion kit from Ground Control today (kicking myself for not checking the f/s posts first). Now, I need dampers, and Spax is my first choice. I know I can buy direct from the UK, but are there any US resellers?

Thanks!

This is my 2012 BMW X5 50i, which I very sadly have to put up for sale. I am the second owner of this car, bought it from the owner?s wife of a BMW Dealership in Maryland with 29K miles on it. The car now has 45,737 Miles on it. I have invested around $10K in the car with a Stage 3 DINAN Tune and Exhaust, as well as Window Tint, Hardwire Radar Detector Kit, and Driving Camera System. It is ready to go with it recently being serviced. The car also has the Certified Pre-Owned Warranty up to 100K Miles or 4/9/2018. Originally this car retailed for $85,095.00 (Fully Loaded), and definitely feels like it! I am selling it because I am changing jobs and can now go back to a smaller car. School me on BW s200's

I am changing up my turbo setup this winter. Some of you may remember my old build using a hacked together top mount manifold and a gm truck turbo.

I am not switching to bottom mount. I bought a SPA t3 manifold for reliability. My gm turbo is going to be a pain in the ass to make fit.

This is a drift car that may also see some street time. I am scared to buy a turbo that will spool too late, thats why I need your help.

Setup is a 2.8, tc spa, studs and .120MLS, megasquirt, etc.

I want a turbo that will start making boost in the late 2000 early 3000 rpms if possible. And I would like a max of 400whp. Slightly less would be fine if I could make more power under the curve.

The price of the BW s200 is really attractive. Would a s256 suit my needs? Will it fit with a SPA?

If not, are there any other cost effective non ebay turbos that fit the bill?

Euro '85 M6 parts car?

Was in Florida last week and met up with a friend who has a Euro '85 M6, it's not for sale but could be had if I want to pursue it. He owns a garage and this customer's car has been sitting there for years. I have an US e28 M5 and I'm thinking if I get it cheap enough I could keep the drivetrain and sell the other bits. Car is straight, somewhat rusty but has good euro bumpers and other trim pieces/interior, etc... can anyone throw me a number for what this gem might be worth? Thanks, Jon

OT: Let's Bogey

Some say that only old foogies drive the E38, others say that all E38 owners are stiff lipped and stuff and don't know how to let their hair down... if they have any that is. s50 cam timing question

Hey guys ... Have spent the last few hours putting a new head on my soon to be track car . Was following the pelican cam timing instructions , but I can't get my exhaust sprocket any where near the left side orientation that the pelican pic shows .. Does it have to be all the way to the left like in the pelican pics ?

Here is the best I could get it , the picture in the Bentley wasn't very clear ..

M60b40 ----- M60b44 parts question

Hey,

Just to note before, I have searched for the answers to these questions and have come up short on a solid answer. Maybe I was using the wrong terms or I just suck at searching. But whatever.

soooo.....

Just went to my local You-pull-it (junk yard) and found a 740i (not sure if e39 or... something else. it was totaled. Looked like it got hit by a bus, on every side...twice.) Funny cause the interior was undamaged. Germany safety saved the guy in this one.

Anyways....

I was able to pull the intake, injectors, fuel rail, 4 coils and the driver side valve cover. Could get the heads if someone wants it. (they say its under 200k :shifty So vague) Valves look good, and so do the camshafts and the chain. Couple M cars (two m3's e36 and e46 i think) if someone also needs something.

the passenger side suspension coil is through the passenger valve cover, so that's not an option.

My question is, and I have had trouble searching for a solid answer;

is there a difference in size between the intake manifold of an m60b40 and a m62b44?

Can the injectors of a m62 be used in a m60?

Are the valve covers of the m62 made of Alum? (they seemed a different material than my magnesium m60b40 covers)

Just curious, I've read about this in other forum posts but was not a clear answer; If you use m62b44 heads on an m60, will there be a bore gap between the heads valve area and the cylinder bore? or vice versa, m60b40 heads on a m62b44?

Also, a side note, Not sure if anyone would know... But can i steam clean my engine (portable steam cleaner gun) (gunky areas around the block/headers) As long as I avoid wires, seals, etc?

thanks mates.

Window Issue

Passenger rear window not going all the way up; how do I tell if the issue is the motor, regulator or both?

E39 2000 BMW M5 (Carbon Black / Imola Red) - LOW PRICE! - Portland, Oregon

VIN: WBSDE934XYBZ94557

I regret having to do this, but I am going to have to sell my 2000 BMW M5. As much as it pains me to do this, I have other things going on in life, and I simply can't afford this car as well as all of my other 'toys' and a family.

Anyhow, the car in question is a 2000 BMW M5 in carbon black with imola red interior and the matte chrome interior trim. The car has 166k miles and runs like a champ.

It was equipped from the factory with ALL of the options at the time including the fairly rare power rear sunshade, and PDC (park distance control) as well. It also features the factory rear sunshades on the side windows as well.

The exterior of the car is fantastic, I would give it a 9.5 out of 10, and I only say that because there's a few areas where touch up paint has been used, but NO door dings, no damage, and not even so much as a dent anywhere!

The interior is a solid 9.5 out of 10. I challenge you to find another E39 M5 with a cleaner interior, the entire interior is almost immaculate! Even the drivers seat is void of the typical wear and crushed bolsters from getting in and out, this interior is literally to die for! The interior on this car has really been babied in every sense of the word, I can't stress that enough. It sees Leatherique products at least once a month.

The car has been tastefully modified with the following:

- Koni Shocks

- H&R Springs

- Eibach Sway Bars

- Muffler Delete

- WeatherTech Digital Fit Floor Mats

- Quaife LSD Differential (a huge improvement over stock!)

- F10 M5 ZHP Shift Knob

- E60 Short Shift Kit

The following has been replaced recently:

- Brand new front and rear brakes with Brembo pads and Meyle rotors

- Brand new Duralast battery (purchased 1 week ago) - note that this is the FACTORY fit battery, not some lousy aftermarket one

- Rebuilt ABS / DSC unit

The car does have a few issues, hence the lower price, the issues are as follows:

- Needs a new clutch (it's perfectly drivable, but it's starting to slip in the upper RPMs. Kuni quoted me $2000 for this and I have the receipt so you can hold me to the price!). The clutch is not that bad yet, but it's slowly going bad. I drive the car as it is and there's no issues at all unless you really get on it.

- The brake light is on and the DSC light is on (I'm told this is usually due to one of the wheel speed sensors being bad. Do not worry, it's NOT the dreaded ABS unit though as that was recently replaced with a rebuilt one).

- The wheels need to be refinished (they aren't damaged, but the original chrome shadow paint is peeling in numerous areas)

- I recently swapped a black faced gauge cluster into the car (got it from Clemster . Because of this the mileage on the odometer reads 103XXX but the actual mileage on the car is 166XXX. It needs to be coded to have the correct mileage but I don't know how to do this. The plus side is that now the car has an ultra rare black face gauge cluster which is true to the 2000 models. Also, no burnt out pixels!

Those are the only issues with the car, and I'm being 100% honest and upfront about them. Realistically you'll put about $2000 into it for the clutch, and maybe a little more for the other issues. So, worst possible case scenario, you come out of it having put $3000 into the car, but I figure that puts the value of the car about right where it should be.

Anyways, I'll take some better pictures when it's nice out.

The car will come with PASoft (BMW Scanner) 1.4 and the cable you need to plug it into the car as well.

My price is $11,000 FIRM. I'm not going to budge on that price one penny for now.

The car has a CLEAN Oregon title which I have in hand, ready to sign over. I have included the VIN with this ad, so you can Carfax it and see that there have been ZERO accidents with this car, it's 100% good to go.

I WILL NOT let anyone test drive this car without cash in hand, period. In fact, please don't even bother coming to see the car (or calling me) unless you have cash in hand. I'm not going to do the typical Craigslist thing where people want to come over, chat forever, only to find out they don't even have the money in the first place.

Anyways, if you are interested, please call me at 503.701.5752.

High idle issue almost isolated - your input appreciated

I just semi-rebuilt an 86 325e m20. Took the engine apart - all but took the head off. New gaskets, head bolts and hoses. Cleaned injectors and new filters. The full monty. Prior symptoms were high idle at cold and surging high to higher when warm. Now it runs smooth but about 2500rpm. Swapped ICV with old one from savage and the idle did come down to around 1250-1500.

However, when I plug the air hose running from intake boot to ICV and where it attaches to the boot, the rpms come down to around 850 and the car runs very smooth. Questions:

1. Can I get along without the ICV and air tube running from intake boot and ICV?

2. Now that I have isolated or improved the idle with plugging the boot and air hose, what does this suggest for further investigation.

3. Would a new ICV valve perhaps correct things further. I do get a response from each (old and original) ICV when I turn the screw.

4. Would this happening point at all to an TPS issue. I think it may be on the fritz after testing but will be reconfirming this evening

Your thoughts are appreciated

Replacement headlight assembly

Hi guys,

While changing my low lights' bulbs, I realized its assembly was cracking on the joint, so I'll have to change it sooner or later. After finding some for ~200$ each (I live in Quebec, hence the high prices), I found those on Amazon. Anyone can give my some sort of feedback on them? Also, will they necessitate any kind of adjusting (1990 535i)?

Thank you!

2009 650I thermostat?

It was a sunny day and 51 degrees out. Went for a ride with the top down. The car seemed to take forever to get heat out of the vents? I set the temp on high...adjusted the vents to "Convertible". The air never really seems to get "HOT". The engine oil temperature seemed to be ok. Car has 80K. Can't be thermostat already? Does open thermostat cause a fault? It got warm..but after 5 miles of driving. Not really hot hot..
