Starting in extreme cold

I've read a few threads about starting and idling our cars in the cold but not THIS cold. It's currently -5°f outside (with a "feels like" -24°) and when I leave work at 1am it's supposed to be below -20°f ("feels like" -40). I've read from my search for a remote start that it's not good to let the car idle and that's why nobody uses remote starts and I should just start driving right away or once the rpms get low, but I feel like at these extreme temps that may not be good. It's a 2011 and I've had it less than a month so I'm pretty paranoid about this sort of thing, I used to just start my e46 and leave it running in my driveway but apparently e90s are a little more advanced? I can't even find a way to see my engine temp to know if it's warmed up at all either. My work is also 1/4 mile from the highway so should i drive around town for a little before hopping on even though when I'm cruising my rpms are pretty low (highway is a 55mph)?

Thanks for any input
