Over the last month been looking to get an older 3 Series Convertible so I've been tracking the local Craigslist Ads. Saw a listing for a set of M-Pars for an e38 with new tires. I've picked up a half dozen or so wheel set and after cleaning and proper advertising had turned them for a few dollars. I contacted the seller and arraigned to meet. While at his house looking at them I noticed a 740i in the driveway. It was his late brothers and hadn't been driven in over a year and he wanted it gone.
The car is a '98 and apart from being dirty the body had no rust or dents. Now for the kicker the car was locked - the battery was dead - there was no way of knowing the condition - Offers and counters were made over the remainder of the week and when the deal was done the out of pocket for the car + M-Pars $1,100. Sold the wheels for $650 & I'm into the car at below salvage price.
The car was towed and after charging it started but with a loud tick. Hooked up the BMW Scanner 1.40 and read all errors they cleared!!
The interior is musty and damp from being a sealed petri-dish for over a year. The drivers seat controlls are inop, the sunroof is inop, all 4 windows work & all lights work.
Using a 6 amp charger on and off for the next couple of days the battery has come back to life. The car is running and took a trip around the block!! Not bad for a $450 buy..
The loud tick is gone after doing the Hydrolic Lifter Bleeding as shown here: http://ift.tt/16yIZ7z
The car stumbles and is spotty on start up maybe as a result of having 15 month old gas so add ~4 gallons of clean premium with 1/4 bottle of SeaFoam. She smoked quite a bit!! Put the rest of the sea-foam in the crank. Still no codes after reading and resetting.
The interior stink has dropped considerably. Another BMW Enthusiast near me has offered the use of an Ozone Machine to ride the remnants of the bad smells.
Was able to get the exterior and interior cleaned before taking it for its fist run at speed! The seats and sunroof are now working after cleaning the connections. The engine and transmission preformed better that hoped... the climate controls works flawless and the cooling system despite and loose radiatorkept the engine spot on!
Had the typical front end shimmy and upon inspection found a broken spring on the drivers front strut . I'd purchased a set of coilover to install on the Navarra 740i in January so the old ones will go here.
I'm starting to get the feeling that I might just keep this one... It was after I washed the Orient Blue Bimmer that I realized it matched my Biaritz Blue Beemer ... As of right now the only issues to fix are inexpensive DIY's
Here's a pic of the Bimmers before putting them away for the night!
