E90 N52 to E39 M62/6 speed

Hi All,

I have been lurking around here for quite some time. I have been going back and forth between buying an e39 or e38 to do an LS swap after my piddly 2.5l N52 gave me an underwhelming experience. Nonetheless, my friend has a 97 540i/6 and after experiencing that car/motor I knew it would satisfy me. I bought a 98 540i/6 a couple weeks ago and I will sell the e90 soon. I also bought a t56 and an L59 5.3 motor. Looking at the cost of the swap, not sure I want to undertake it right now. Also, the previous owner dropped 6k into the timing guides on this motor so I figure it has a lot of life left in it. I don't want to mention how much I have spent on the n52 and the little I have gained in power. I really like the power the M62 has but I know I will be slowly itching to take it to the max within reason. I have been reading a lot and I have some ideas, so please let me know what you think of the possible mods:

  • Electric Fan Mod (I bought 2 Taurus Fans. Just Need to buy the wiring from DCC and another shroud do mount it to)

  • Tune (there is a member on here that does remote tunes that seems to get good reviews)

  • Dinan CAI

  • Headers (I don't really want to buy Supersprints because of the cost. I know a good fabricator and would prefer to modify OBX units to work. Feedback appreciated on this)

  • Lightened flywheel & M5 Clutch (no record of the PO changing the clutch and its at 160k miles. It will probably need replacing at some point soon)

  • M5 LSD

  • Muffler delete (just so I can enjoy the sound)

I am big on dyno's and testing after any serious modification so I would likely do several dynos after major mods like headers or the electric fan. Coming from a 175bhp engine, I figure this should hold me over until this motor dies and I can slowly build parts for a serious LS swap at that point.
