I've generally had good luck with remanufactured components but I don't want to trust just any and every thing out there. I've been reading mixed reviews on the web. Found some good remarks about O'Reilly's re-man line MasterPro. A lot of the other stuff under that label is sort of bargain basement so not sure.
Pelican carries the Atlantic Automotive Enterprises brand, about $150, more or less the same price at O'Reilleys and Autozone. Found one post in a thread (that went nowhere) claiming that brand was trouble. They also carry a Zf re-man for $263. IINM, that's the OEM for the new part. I might be foolish try to save $115 in this matter.
Pretty sure I need a new pump. I found an '87 325i sedan in great shape for $1200 - donated to an auto auction. But there's a reason these things get donated. Pretty sure this was the genuine 'owned by one owner, a little old lady.' Much of it is in excellent shape but when changing the cam belt, found it was loose (!?). The tensioner hadn't been relieved from the install posture. The belt looked halfway new which might explain why it hadn't gone south yet. The water pump was on its last legs. Both dust boots on the rack are torn. I'm getting power steering whine (didn't notice it in the test drive) but fluid is not leaking. Foaming off and on though. The reservoir to pump hose clamp had been damaged, one of those original clamp on types, this I found when I took the reservoir out to clean it. Pulled right off of the tube.
Doesn't whine during normal driving, only when stopped at idle. When I rev it to about 2500 at standstill, there's no whine when going stop to stop. Whines with fluid at the top line of the dipstick.
I'm going to look for a good boneyard rack but it looks like I need a pump as well, and with that might be able to go for while with the current rack and new/used boots.
