Changing Oil

Hi guys I have a 94 325is and was wondering if you guys just go by the manual for the type of oil you use? Or do you guys have any favorites? I know the weight of the oil is supposed to change for winter months but I don't have my car with me right now to read the manual and wanted to purchase the oil so when I get it back I can change it before taking a longer trip
