My dilemma started when I wanted to install a M5 4.9L Motor in a 2000 E38 740I Sport, everybody said no it can not be done, yet it will fit in a 95 740I? Strange, I believe its a clearance problem with the air filter housing configuration, not certain since I decided to research racing 4.4 L motors and I found it to be actually better, now you can build an extreme killer motor strictly suggested for track use only due to the unreliability issues, obviously it needs constant attention and who needs that as a daily headache. But the same builder also can build a toned down version, naturally aspirated and horse power that will smoke any M5 including the 10 cylinder model. As a driver I prefer and the wide body of a E38 to a E39, almost the same length but the wider stance for me allows better handling and doesnt have the tendency as the E39 back ass trying to over take your front. This occurs while diving into a hard turn a bit faster using power to push you through, almost like a Porsche 911. Anyways my first performance build on a E38 has been enlightening and surprisingly as to the availability of various performance parts. I love the car and excited to see the finished car. The motors Ive seen a majority of owners do is supercharging a relatively stock motor which severs to increase horse power but honestly really lacks the performance I prefer while flying on the autobahn in Germany.
Though I am committed in the engine build and like to provide the stats including the cost to build it, I was wondering if anyone has configured a M5 v8 into a E38 ever, also if anyone knows exactly why a M5 4.9 will not fit a 2000 E38, oh one more question has anyone done a performance build on the V12 motor, that was my first taste of the E38 having had a 2000 750IL, which other then being just to long to really drive hard on windy roads, the 12 performed so wonderfully and so smooth.
