hey guys, i just wanted to share the story of the rear passenger brake caliper on my 2007 328xi. on my way home from six flags, me and my girlfriend start hearing a hissing noise. we unfortunately didn't think much of it right up until we got off the freeway. we, i want to say luckily, got off on the wrong exit and the first turn available happened to be a residential street. i say luckily because it was a right turn and as soon as we did it, the car stutters and comes to a complete stop. now at this time i was scared because i happen to have been reading tales of cars going over pot holes just right in that the wheel bearing could be knocked out of place. no brake light came on and i was late on getting my tranny looked at. so im scared that it could be my transmission causing issues or my wheel bearing. after calling a tow truck, i decide to do various test to determine what it could be, and i was no closer to finding the issue. the tow truck came roughly an hour later and when i asked for his oppinion, all he did was flash down at mt wheel and you could see the caliper resting right inbetween the bottom of the rotor and the rim. i get home, take the wheel off, and you can see how one bolt snapped completely in half and the second one looked to have wiggled out on its own. i actually didn't know that you had to torque the bolts on the caliper as i apparantly overtightened them(or atleast just the 1). there was no damage to caliper, no damage to the brake line and no damage to the roter. replaced with class 10.9 bolts from autozone and it runs with no issues that i can see. there was rim damage from the caliper grinding, but not enough to ruin it and after driving it, it seems there's not even a need to re-balance it. im hoping to actually get all 4 wheels torqued correctly today just as a precaution. i just wanted to share this, just because i happened to not die or even damage my car.
my caliper fell :)
