Hi all,
First of all I have an E32 740i 10/1993 (DE66636) with an A5S 560Z - ZF 5HP30 tranny which appears to have problems.
After shogun's suggestion am posting my problem here and hope you can help, so here it goes:
In the past a had an air leak from the intake manifold which was giving me a check engine. At some point in time that issue hit me on the transmission (don't know why) resulting a sudden slippage (with some awful grinding noise with thump lock sounds) in transmission of axial thrust (the car was reving but it was moving slow), this issue was a lot worse when the car was idling at the traffic light. After shutting off the car for a bit or after driving it for some time the issue was going away or coming back on non-deterministically. At some point I resolved the issue by changing all seals at the intake manifold and that was the end of the check engine, but not of the grinding noise and the thump lock sounds at startup or the grinding noise at idle speeds at the traffic light.
Now, when the car is started and I put in the reverse I hear the noise of grinding pepper mill (but the car moves backwards ok!). The same thing happens if I try to move forward at low speed, until I build up thrust and speed where the noise goes off completely. The problem reappears when I arrive at the traffic lights where the car is at idle while on some occasions at idle I heard an unexpected grinding lock which ultimately stalled the engine.
I can also sense excess heat after a couple of hours driving, plus the change of gears either some time happens ok, whereas other times it kicks when the gears change upwards.
Regarding previous behaviour of transmission, I forgot to tell :
1) when I put in the reverse the rear part as if it kicks me in the but, or raises up a bit
2) when I put in the reverse I hear a noise as if a piece of paper sheet is hitting slightly on a multi-blade fan at idle
3) there was time when the check engine was coming and going quickly (while with the air leak) after which a transmission program indication was kicking in and I was moving as if in 2nd gear from idle all the time.
A) What is your view on this behaviour, regarding a transmission problem? Most issues manifest themselves at idle speed, and less while driving. The repair man said straight away it is a Torque converter that I need to change, but am not sure if I should believe him.
Regarding Torque Con. I have found the following:
http://europeantransmissionscom.x-sh...us&mode=update
http://ift.tt/1NItrgb
Assuming it was a torque converter, the TC I found a remanufactured one for 279 USD + 230 USD (torqueconverter1.com) to send to greece. It is not clear to me whether a used one (say 160 USD) has the same lifetime as a remanufactured one. The problem is that I do not know how much used is the part to judge how quickly it may let me down again (assuming this was my problem).
B) How would you go about overhauling the tranny given the above situation in a stepwise approach?
many thanks
Theo
