Car dies when shifting into gear

I have a 1981 BMW 320I with an automatic transmission and the car will occasionaly die when I shift it into drive or reverse. I know the car has an exhaust leak as well as a vacume leak that I have yet to find though I assume its from the old rubber hood that connects the throttle body to the AFM. I believe my fuel mixture is off but since the PO cut off the plugs from both ends for the O2 I don't want to mess with it too much, but could this be the cause of the issue? I've done a complete tune up. only about 2000 miles on NGK Nickle plugs Bosh 7mm wires and a new bosh cap and rotor and only 300 or so miles on a new fuel filter. the plugs are gasped to the correct specs as well. I'm going to be fixing the exhaust leak to see if that helps with my fluctuating idle. I would like to add that the car is also burning rich I can smell the fuel but that could also be caused by the exhaust leak correct? the weld is broken right before the muffler. I removed the cat and the muffler is mounted where the cat was mounted before
