I've been debating this, and had even posted this car for sale a couple 2 to 3 weeks ago but decided at the time not to let this car go. However, I feel it is in my best interest to part ways. It's a fabulous car and a blast to drive, but it is not fitting my current situation and needs so I need to make a change.
Originally a North Carolina car, now in Richmond, VA for only 3 months so it is absolutely rust free. I have only owned this car for a few months. I am the third owner. It was a one owner car until Easter time this year. The previous, 2nd owner only sold the car to fund repair on his track car. This M3 was a 4th car for him so he decided to free up the funds to fix his damaged track car. Before owning this car, I had a very well built '96 Volvo 850R wagon that I did a manual transmission swap, suspension rebuild and countless other upgrades. Someone offered me insane money to buy the car (which was not for sale) and I let it go and purchased this M3. However, I really need a wagon for the space and regret selling my 850R.
I have worked in the automotive industry for 20 years. I am a former Lexus technician, but now work for Volkswagen in Parts as an injury took me out of wrenching professionally about 7 years ago. So, needless to say I know my was around a car and my vehicles are always maintained with only the best. Also, one of my technicians here is a former BMW specialist, and he gave this car a very thorough examination recently. This car is 100% original, un-modified, never tracked or raced. This car is a perfect canvas for whatever your ideal E36 M3 is.
Here are this cars needs that we found when checking over the car:
-U-joints in driveshaft have slight play causing a little noise
-RTA bushings are original and need replacement
-Shift linkage bushings need replacement
-Passenger airbag light is on. I found one of the connectors unplugged under the passenger seat, so I reconnected it. However I do not have a device to reset the light.
-Valve cover gasket is seeping slightly
The cooling system was rebuilt by the original owner about 30k ago. Front suspension was rebuilt by the original owner as well. I am in the process of recovering the headliner now as it was sagging. I also replaced the rear upper shock mount bushings when I first purchased the car as they were separated. The rear upper shock towers are in perfect shape. The original owner had the front clip (front fenders, hood, bumper) repainted for restoration purposes at about 100k.
This is a beautiful example of a great driving collector vehicle. Everything works. Just needs the idea owner.
