This all started about a week and a half ago when I noticed while driving my brother home from work that one of my lifters was going crazy.
That was of course frustrating, but I had some stuff to try to fix it, and at first it seemed to work.
I had had the oil changed at Pep Boys (because I've gotten lazy and cheap) and now probably never will again. The work order said they replaced the oil and filter, but I'm a little skeptical. Anyway, 1000 miles after that oil change, I changed it again, thinking crappy oil, or dirty oil, or a clogged filter might prevent sufficient oil flow to the lifters. So I used Quaker State 10w40 and a FRAM (unfortunately the only one I could get after 3 stores) filter.
The day after the oil change, I drove it to class. It started out tapping, but by the time I got on the freeway, it was good! Two days later, tap tap tap... I added oil, and it shortly went away. Two days later again, and I got home after classes tonight to find it tapping once more. I drove to my brother's place and back a bit later, hoping it'd clear up, but it was a no-go. 4 miles freeway driving and it was gone. Parked it for 5 minutes to move cars and when I started it up once more it was back.
This behavior really doesn't make much sense to me. I understand principally why a lifter may begin to tick, but not why it would alternate between ticking and not ticking.
I'm sort of at my wit's end here, and very frustrated. The only thing I know of and have left to do before tearing into the head during my spring break is try overfilling the engine with oil by 0.5qt. That failing (and I strongly believe it will) I'll have to get a fairly pricey 32mm socket for the tensioner, some spare lifters (in case I find one or more of mine are SERIOUSLY toast), some laquer remover, and thoroughly clean the lifters. That whole operation has me concerned because I've never done cam removal/installation on an M50.
So before that point, I'd really like to make sure I haven't missed anything obvious, not obvious, or completely obscure.
Also to get advice on the lifter rebuild should it come to that.
Please lend me your experience and knowledge.
