Help 94 325i convertible -won't crank - trying to narrow down other possible reasons!

Hi -

New to this forum, and to cars in general, having spent most of my time on motorcycles previous to this year - I've had the car about 4 months, she's never had a problem until today, when she wouldn't fire up at all - tries and tries, but never catches - we've had a lot of snow and ice the past week here in Brooklyn, and she is parked on the street, don't know if that might have been the cause.

To my ear, and that of my friend, a very knowledgable Volvo guy, it sounds like she's not getting fuel in.

I have:

made sure she has gas - she does.

checked the error codes - I get only

1444 No more faults This code shows that all faults have been fixed. Required to erase the computer's memory.

checked all the fuses in the box - nothing appears blown.

checked and swapped the main and fuel pump relays - no change.

jumpered through the main and fuel pump relays - no change.

When the fuel pump relay is jumped, you can hear a whirring from below the engine that I assume is the fuel pump working.

After we jumped the fuel pump, the car started twice for a second or two - we thought this must be the fuel drawing the last of the fuel from the fuel line, and as it did start, we now think that the problem is not with spark but with the in tank fuel pump.

In order to test that, I accessed the fuel tank, checked the electrical connections to the pump - it was getting power, and then used a 12 volt motorcycle battery to power the in tank fuel pump to see if it would make some happy noise.

Powered by the 12 volt battery, the in tank fuel pump sounds like it's working, though the car still does not start.

Is the 12 volt (it's an old battery) not enough power to run from the tank?

If I have theoretically determined that the in tank fuel pump is working, that it is receiving power, and that the engine is probably getting spark as it did catch twice, and the on board computer doesn't bring up any error codes -

what else could the problem be?

does it sound like I am completely barking up the wrong tree?

Any help greatly appreciated - I live in Brooklyn, and as the car is parked on the street, I don't have much time before I will start accruing parking tickets, so I need to decide whether this is serious as to require towing to a shop, which is going to destroy my bank account, or if I can root out the problem in another evening?

Thanks in advance!

Obadiah
