Our BMW's have the live L/100km or MPG scales which are electrically operated & gain data from various engine system to determine the values, it's useful but the average consumption is often not that accurate as it is easily affected by high fuel consumption over short periods giving falsely high readings.
I am looking to develop a system for my E32 by which I can work out the fuel flow rate & thus determine the fuel consumption for a given trip. Easily done with a simple micro controller, the problem is where to get this fuel data from. By accessing the "hidden" OBC menu I can get a readout with 1 sec resolution of the current litres per hour but I have no idea how accurate that is, it is possible to use that info to derive an approximate consumption value but I want to keep this as accurate/true as possible. Preferably I'd like to find out how the system determines fuel usage and interpret that data myself.
Other than the inbuilt system the only way I can think of getting flow rates/consumption would be to measure the volume before the pump and the volume in the return then calculate the difference. Quite a lot of work though and you'd need several sensors.
Anyone have any suggestions? I know it's a bit of a different question but I think it would be quite useful to know how much fuel a given trip used .
Would be happy to sell the finished product if anyone wanted one & provide the plans for free if you wanted to DIY
