alternator won't fit on the bottom

I'll link a picture to explain what I'm saying, but there's a little metal lip on the bottom hole for the bottom bolt that won't let the alternator slide into position. is it alright if I file this down? I cant bang it on with a mallet either. there's like .5-1 mm too much metal to let it even slide on.
