Fuel Sending Unit/Pump?

I recently took my 92 325i on my first long distance trip since I swapped the engine (same NV M50). I got about an hour into my drive and the car would not accelerate no matter how much I advanced the throttle, then it started sputtering and eventually died (fortunately I was able to pull to the shoulder of the interstate). The car still showed 1/4 tank and the OBC said I had another 80 miles to go. Long story short after my extensive roadside diagnostics I figured what the heck let's throw some gas in it and see if it helps. Threw 2 gallons in and the car started up and drove fine.

So I know either my gas gauge isn't properly working (sending unit), or my fuel pump is weakening and won't run lower than 1/4 tank. Kept the car over 1/2 tank and it made the rest of the trip (360 miles round trip) without any issues.

Once I got home and took the car back out I had another problem. The car will pulse or hesitate in a rhythmic manner when driving around 3.5K to 5K RPM's and I hit the throttle (hard but not flooring). It also was shaking a bit during idle, but RPMs didnt drop and it never died on me.

Is this a failing fuel pump? Would a failing sending unit cause this even if the pump is fine? Could it be my Throttle Position Sensor or Crank Sensor? I will be checking the sensors this weekend, but I wanted some advice before I drop the money on a new pump and sending unit.
