Hello community,
I know this topic has came up almost zillions of times, I am a semi novice but tend to learn fairly quickly. I have been doing a lot of research on my problem and would just like to get some opinions if possible.
My issue:
April 6th driving home from work I randomly got the red battery light on and off, few blocks from my house. Drove rest of the way home parked it went to bed.
Today, April 7th, woke up recalled my issue but had to work. Drove all the way to work and got the same light a few blocks from work. This time it stays on when I was 1 block from work. Parked my car went to work did some minor research while there, so I went ahead and tested my currents on my OBC. I did this while off and my car reads 120 which I believe is 12v. It kind of had a small fluctuation to 11.9 but that's it.
So end of day came on my way back home light was off until I was half way home and I was testing my OBC my whole drive home. Car dropped to 11.7, I had to do a hard acceleration at one point traffic issues and it knocked up to 14v and stayed there for quite a while then once I got home it dropped back to 12.
Was going to have pep boys test my battery but it started pouring rain and I didn't wanna risk a tow in that weather (pep boys is around the corner from my house). I had to drive elsewhere not too distant and was watching my voltage on my OBC and it dropped down to 10. And lights started turning on glady I was home when this happend parked my car and went inside.
I'm thinking this is a probable alternator issue, I let the car sit while I did research went back to check voltage after 2 hours of sitting and it reads 11.9-12 engine off..
This is where I come to my conclusion of it being a possible alternator issue.
Personally I don't mind dropping on a new alternator and battery as my car is 14 years old (2001 325i) and I have 148k miles.
I bought the car a year ago, and I have come to think it's on its second battery, it is a BMW battery.
AGAIN I'm just posting to gets some input I have done a solid amount of research and plan on doing alternator first and rule out battery second, and voltage regulator last. I know I'm throwing money, but I would rather fix a few things then fix one and run into a problem later on.
Was considering buying s battery but then what if my alternator was bad and it was the weekend I would have no transportation, rather order a alternator since pelican parts is one city over from where I live, takes 1 day or will call to pick up my purchases. To where a battery I can pick up any day of the week.
I am very picky when it comes to parts I tend to get quality. Bosch is my plans.
Thanks,
Hopefully someone will be able to assist me.
