So can you cause permanent smokey exhaust problem by using too thin motor oil?

For the last while Ive been planning a Valve Stem seal job (still need that tool!) since I have smoke (blue grey) from one exhaust bank. However I was reading up on symptoms of Valve stem smoke and talking to a local mechanic... perhaps Im barking up the wrong tree?



My symptom are:

- No smoke on start up

- Smokes under hard acceleration, especially if pressing and releasing the accelerator pedal

- Smokes when stationary if you press and release the pedal or just press and hole it

- I tried diff grade oils, didnt really make much diff (though the smell and amount of smoke changes)

- Its not PCV or fueling related





From this description, the mechanic asked me if I ever put in much thinner oil as he has seen situations where thin oil lets the piston ring slip or move from its groove, allowing oil the freedom to escape. These problems only started after I tried out 0w-30 last year (bear in mind 0w is the same thickness as 5w but has more anti freezing agents in it). While I did hear the fully synth makes seals weep thing before (which doesnt seem to be happening) I never heard of this, anyone?
