How does your cruise control work?

I use my cruise control daily on my work commute, and it holds speed just fine. However, when I press resume or accelerate (+) it responds crudely: jerky acceleration with surges in engine rpm, as if it's trying to resume/accelerate as quickly as possible. This is not what I expect from a smooth-driving luxury car, and it's certainly NOT the way the cruise control works in my E39.

The previous owner had the ECM re-flashed with Auto Logic "P-Tune" software here . While it supposedly delivers more power, I strongly suspect the software engineers neglected to properly map the cruise control interface. This was also the case when I retrofitted a multifunction steering wheel in my V8 E31 and employed a cruise control adapter designed for the V12. The behavior is identical: crude speed changes upon resume or accelerate (+).

So...my question for the group is:

Is this normal behavior for E38 cruise control? Does your cruise operate smoothly upon resume or accelerate?
