I certainly hear a vacuum leak! As for the other sound, I don't have the motor can't help.

Certainly either a vacuum leak or a leaky header, but I'm leaning on vacuum.

Sounds like loose spark plugs and chain tensioner needing to be done.

Is that exhaust visible in the video?
Looks like a major exhaust leak.

Oh wow, watched it again - and actually LOOKED this time, I just listened the first time.

That smoke should NOT be there.

Damn phone, i see the smoke. Exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold.

It sounds like your intake manifold gaskets are leaking, that's the swish sound I hear.

Would that cause the increased rapping sound as the car continues to heat up? When I shut off the car it won't start back up right away.

- - - Updated - - -

It doesn't sound like that from cold start, it takes awhile for the sound to get noticible.

This sound is what I'm referring to:

This sound is what I'm referring to: That didn't have as much of a rattle sound or deep metallic sound as mine did. I had the new intake gaskets installed in April so I will check to see if they installed it properly.

After listening to yours again, it sounds different anyway.

Certainly sounds like a leaky exhaust, beit at the manifold or at a spark plug or two. Spark plug happens and exhaust manifold is more rare.

Again, as for that rattle sound, I can't tell what's normal and what's not because I don't have the VANOS.

But there is certainly an exhaust leak SOMEWHERE.

Seeing that smoke puffing out says it's at the headers - hopefully nothing is cracked, if it was though you would see leaks on your driveway.

I hope someone with more knowledge can help ya out! GL

The smoke coming is from the upper timing gaskets leaking btw.

To diagnose start with the easy stuff.

1. Check sparkplugs. Remove them, inspect and reinstall.

2. Check exhaust for leaks. If you do a little seafoam in the vacuum line, you'll see it pour out of any leak that the car might have. It's a good way to find an exhaust leak.

3. Check for vacuum leaks. Seafoam can help with this also.

4. Check the timing chain tensioner.

Please keep us posted. Good Luck!

If that were my car I'd pull the plugs and the oil pan and see what they both look like.

If there is oil in the spark plug wells that would cause it not to start after running for a bit?

Put a Lucas oil additive in. I do that every oil change it helps so much.

I know that the rolling deep clunk is definitely VANOS, - it's nothing to be worried about. Get the reseal kit from Beisan when you do the guides and manifold gaskets - it will go away. Mine sounded the same. The high pitched clicking and the swish/puff sound are related to other things. That smoke/leak definitely shouldn't be happening.

E12 Parts Car FOUND

Hello E12 fans - I noticed there was no subforum for E12 specfically - so I decided to post this here:

I thought you would be interested in seeing this little jewel I found when I was out scouting for parts for my E30:

Here is a couple of more pics from the Drivers side:

E12 e.jpg

E12 g.jpg

This car was in pretty good shape - I have actually seen this car in this junk yard for many years now and never paid much attention to it.

The body is in good shape (the lower portion of the rocker panels have some signs of rust).

The interior is in decent shape - even the bavarian emblem is still in the glove compartment box and is in decent shape.. (although I didnt know it came with a bavaria (or bavarian) emblem?

Hubcaps present on all four rims - yes all four rims and hubcaps.

Glass is good (I dont remember windshield exactly..)

My understanding is that this model is a rarer model in the US - so I thought I would snap a few pics of her..

The junk yard is located in central Iowa... (that's as precise as I am going to be as I need to get a few parts from another BMW out there - I don't want to advertise my spot at this time - hope you understand)

Anyone know the year? - The hood looks early correct? 1974 perhaps?

- - - Updated - - -

After doing a bit more searching - I think what I found was a E3 Bavaria.. Not an E12..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Bavaria

Can anyone confirm this? I didn't see a production plate - I just assumed (incorrectly) it was an early E12... but I do know a bavaria badge is in the glovebox.

First e30! Looking for M Technica 2 parts...

Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum - Powered by vBulletin

Join DateSep 2013LocationHoustonPosts2My Cars90s 328i coupe

Hello all...
First off, thanks to everyone who made this forum happen and all you contributing members for this database of awesome information!!!! It has single handedly got me through all of my night classes for the last 10 months.
This is my first post so your patience with my ignorance is appreciated. I recently started gathering parts and pulled the trigger on my first e30!
Heres where I am at:
? M52B28 short block (97 328i) w/ some odds and ends parts
? S52B32 complete motor (w/ electronics) and zf manual trans
? Front Lower Valance MT2 ordered this morning from N Ireland
? 1985 325e, open diff, manual
Car runs great as is with strong eta motor and very tight trans. I have decided to drive it as is for a while and build the future Frankenstein turbo on the side for an all at once swap down the road. I?d like to get the exterior converted to M Technic 2 in the meantime. I?ve only found the aforementioned valance so far. Any wisdom on this topic from anyone??? Any additional complications I will run into being an early model e30 (w/ the diving board bumpers)?
Here?s some pics: (if I can figure out how to get them on here)

Hello everyone,
I hope everybody had a great Christmas. I bought another 8er last week, it's 1993 850CI Automatic with 140000 miles, i noticed a 2 wire plug (blue/yellow and red/gray) hanging at the right side of the transmission, any idea what that is? i appreciate any help.
Thanks
Sam

E30 MI S52 swapped '87 325e coupe

Throwing this out for sale, Winter time means the summer cars are in storage and gives me naughty thoughts about getting something else

If you're looking for a show winning car this isn't for you, the car has been used by a previous owner for drifting and then used by me for auto-x. it is however 99% rust free (small bubble on the sunroof otherwise clean)

Chassis:
1987 BMW 325e Coupe power windows and mirrors 5-speed.
I believe the color is cosmos blue
Rear trunk is tan due to rear end accident the PO suffered
Shaved Engine Bay

Engine:
1997 S52 motor with 175k miles
New Oil Pan, Oil Housing, Rear Main Seal gaskets
OBD1 wiring harness/ecu
M50 intake manifold
TRM Tune
3.5" 540i maf
bimmerworld intake elbow
OEM Fan Delete Nut
Cooler thermostat and coolant switch
Rallyroad.net wired oil pump nut
AEM dryflow air filter
OBD 1 exhaust manifolds
Thrush glasspack mufflers
Holley Billet 12700 fuel pump
Brand new crank sensor

Suspension:
Koni Yellows front/rear
Ground control converted front coilovers with eibach springs
Tein linear rate rear springs (don't recall the rates off hand)
Treehouse racing front control arm bushings
All other suspension bushings replaced with poly
e30tech adjustable rear subframe adjusters

Transmission:
aluminum diff/motor/trans mounts
G260 transmission
F1 Stage 3 clutch and Chromoly lightweight flywheel
Garagistic Transmission Cross Brace
UUC DSSR
3.73 ratio LSD with only 60k miles on it and recently changed redline fluid

Wheel/Brakes:
Klutch Republic SL1 wheels 15x8.5
225/50/15 Kumho AST's with 3k miles
Extended 75mm wheel stud conversion
10mm spacers front, 8mm spacers rear
EBC Drilled/slotted rotors
Hawk HPS Brake Pads
Stainless brake lines

Interior:
Recaro Pole Position fixed back racing seats drivers and passengers
NRG Harness Bar
5 point racing harnesses drivers and passengers
Deep dish steering wheel (I think its an ebay cheapy from the PO)
Carpet and back seat removed and carpet area truck bed lined

Extras:
Plastic Rear Bumper the headlight brackets and lights to add the high beams back in.

Niggling issues:
-Currently the gauge cluster is dead, it worked when the car first started running which leads me to believe I've been a victim of the e30 cluster death issue common to these cars.
-No e-brake, that didn't bother me for autocross but for daily use its a bother having to leave the car in gear constantly.
-Rebuilt title, the PO was rear ended (hence the non matching trunk) and the car was considered totaled, you can see the dent/damage the car sustained to the trunk tub and then of course the trunk lid

I'm asking $7000 OBO for the car as it currently sits

I am potentially interested in trading for an e36 m3 sedan preferred and must be a manual

I also have 275/35/15 hoosier a6's, euro s50 itb's, raceland heat wrapped headers and magnaflow mufflers which were destined for use on this car which could be negotiated into the purchase price of this car.

As I was playing with the grandkids on You Tube with their new iPads, after an hour of watching videos, they decided to take a break and I borrowed it to type in "BMW E31" in the search field and found this. I don't know if it was posted before in another thread but if it hasn't...here it is.

This is a UK dealership video from 1989 that I found fascinating and thought some of you might be interested in this. Enjoy!
