so last weekend i changed my oil, ofhg, and vanos line on my 2000 328ci. the car was fine for a week. drove well, no noises, starts right up etc. once i pulled into my driveway last night from work i noticed a strange chattering sound at idle. its difficult to isolate as it tends to bounce around when the hood is open but it sounds loudest right in front of my kindney grill. I pretty much rulled out vanos as i completely rebuilt it last summer and its not rapid enough. i also checked the heat shields and while they are a little loose its deff not the rattle. I also recently replaced both idler and tensioner pulleys as well as the hydraulic tensioner assembly and alternator so those pulleys/bearings can be ruled out.
Right now im leaning towards water pump bearing ( even though i replaced that 1.5 years ago) or one of the other drive pulleys. my fan clutch was replaced before i bought the car and ive barely put 20k on it since so i doubt that. I did use a different brand of oil than normal ( german brand from bma auto parts in so cal) and it does kind of sound like something isnt getting lubricated up top. any way i added an example of the sound below. now keep in mind this is not my car but it sounds almost exactly like this.
