Recently my mother's 2003 Chevy Impala had the lower radiator support rust through and then fall out. I raised that concern to her a few months ago when I did the oil change. This along with my pointing out how the rest of the car was in pretty bad shape as well prompted her to have me start looking at replacement cars. One day she saw an E39 in the parking lot of a store and commented how she liked that shape and style, to which I replied that they are actually reasonably affordable.
So that brings us to me looking to add another BMW to the "fleet" (right now my 1986 635csi is the only Bimmer here). After looking through the local craigslist I found a silver 1999 528i touring with a 5 speed manual that is claimed to be rust free. The car has 153,000 miles on it, heated and power everything, grey interior (personally I'd prefer black but my mom likes the grey), 6 disc CD changer, and had a tuneup at about 150,000 miles ("new plugs, fuel injector cleaning, throttle plate cleaning, new cam position sensor, new intake air temp sensor, rear differential service"). It needs a wheel speed sensor (which is included), and some tires. I contacted the gentleman selling the car and he seemed pretty knowlegable about it and I may be going to look at it tomorrow or next friday. He is asking $3700 and it has an extra set of wheels with snow tires.
I know these cars, like all BMWs from this time, have cooling system issuses, which I have budgeted for a total overhaul; and the electrical can get odd as well as some pixels going out on the OBC. Other than that are there any other common issues that I should look for?
Thank you for the help, hopefully all checks out and there will be a nice touring in the driveway.
