Problems with vh45 swap? Looking for input on cheap drift build.

I've always loved and worked on cars since I had my license, my current project is a 97 GSX with a bored 2.3l engine that I rebuilt from the bottom up with manley forged everything. However, my friends have infected me with the drifting bug...I enjoy driving AWD slightly more but being a poor college student its not the most ideal car to be in. I've been doing a lot of research the past few months while I say up a bit of cash on what would be the most cost effective way to get into drifting and really what makes the most sense is getting a shell and swapping a v8 into it. What I have questions about is why aren't there more vh45 swaps into e30s and e36s? I was reading Vorshlag's e30 budget build thread and they were contemplating putting a v45 into the e30 but didnt and never really gave a reason. I know the fitment would be tight but it seems like it could be done. My friends who have infected me with the drift bug both have v8 swaped 240's, one is a vh45 with a super charger on it and the other a ls1 swap, both got into their cars for around $5k. Side note: I see lots of people on this forums saying it cost them anywhere from $4k-7k for their high mileage ls1 swaps! :eyecrazy That is insane! I don't know if i'm reading outdated post but I feel like if your ls1 swap cost more than 3k you messed up at some point in the build. My buddy was able to get a full ls1 drivetrain with motor mounts for $1000.

Anyways, I prefer the vh45 to the ls1 despite the lower power output:

DOHC - I think the push rod engine design is archaic design, plus I think it sounds better.

Slightly lighter and cheaper than the LS1 - You pay less and get less weight (about 50lbs I think) and really has about the same abundance of parts compared to the ls due to all the q45s out there.

Over Engineered - These engines have a reputation for being over engineered and known to run into the high 200k's. My friend daily drives his supercharged vh45 swap and abuses it to no end and hasnt had any problems in 15k miles motor had 30k-60k miles on it before the super charged went on. I believe its pushing right around 350 to the wheels. Pretty good for $600 if you ask me. He could blow it up tomorrow and gotten more than his money worth out of the engine. The best part is when it does blow up you can just go get another one for $600 or maybe even cheaper.

Driven by more mature drivers - I think everyone knows that the biggest factors that determine the life of an engine are the everyday use and the maintenance of the engine. I dont know about you but I'd rather have the engine that was driven by the middle aged, middle class driver than the guy who hit the rev limiter every time they're leaving the trailer park.

It just makes sense to me to get a vh45 over a ls1 so why aren't they more popular in e30s and e36s? I like the idea of having a bmw as a drift car because every drift car around here (Tampa, FL) is a 240sx. It looks like the 5.0 is probably the easiest and most cost effective swap for a BMW but I really dislike the 5.0 and really like the vh45. The vh45 has the potential to be just slightly more expensive than the 5.0 swap with way more performance potential. Im sure many people have thought about this swap but I dont see a lot of information about it so i'm assuming that there are problems that get in the way. I would much appreciate insight from anyone who has any experience with this swap and can provide some insight into the problems that I would encounter?
