e36 convertible top problem + dead battery...stuck after browsing this forum

Hi all,

I've been stubbornly digging myself into a deeper hole and after reading guide after guide I am completely stuck.

Currently own a '98 M3 vert with full-automatic top and everything was running well until I accidentally left the light on and the battery died. I managed to charge the battery once and the car started up again, but the following day it died (for good) and no matter how much I charge I am unable to start the car.

I want to access the rear battery and replace it but he tonneau cover is partially up preventing me from opening the trunk lid up fully (can open a few inches). With the battery dead, there is no way for me to get the top down. It seems pulling the emergency release lever under the seats will not release the tonneau cover motor (?) and I need to access it via the trunk. So I'm completely stuck as to how to access the trunk; any feedback will help!

In summary:

  1. dead battery and need to change

  2. tonneau cover is partially stuck up (blocking the trunk from opening)

  3. cannot move the top down/put tonneau cover fully down

  4. I pulled the emergency release already (based on what I read this is the wrong start)
