Hi guys,
My 1997 528i Touring has the Tiptronic auto box. It's holding the gears too long... I've driven several other cars with this engine and gearbox as well as lots of auto e39s, it's definitely behaving a bit strangely.
It often shifts down into first gear when I'm negotiating a slow junction or a tight roundabout. It seems to change up around 2200rpm as a matter of course which is definitely a bit later than others I've driven. It also seems very overzealous when it comes to hills. The slightest incline and it will shift down one or even two cogs for pretty much no reason at all... I'll be driving quite happy in top gear at 80mph with plenty of torque for hills and the slightest incline can see me changing down and running 3500 or close to 4000 rpm. I can knock it over into manual mode and shift back into the correct gear and still have plenty of pull but I just can't convince the auto box to do the same.
It's not catastrophic, the gear changes are smooth and everything sounds/feels OK, it's just a waste of fuel. What can I do? The engine is low mileage and in very good health so I don't think it's related to that. The car has done 156k miles and the engine has done 70k.
