Searching for the Alternator part no. with a mirror on a Euro M42

Car: E36 318IS Coupe manu Oct 92

I have all the symptoms of the alternator voltage regulator failing. Surging in lights, fan blower speed and wiper speed as revs increase. Also the dash lights go out and I'm getting a check engine code of 1231 indicating a problem with the battery voltage.

Before I go off purchasing a replacement voltage regulator, I've been trying to work out which one I have since apparently you can have either the Valeo or Bosch alternators and the regulator is not interchangeable. RealOEM lists 4 different regulators depending on which alternator is installed.

Wondering if it's realistic to determine which one it is without needing to remove from the car?

Haven't been able to see any part numbers with a mirror, but I'm willing to believe that I'm just not quite looking in the right place.
