'03 325xi front end clunk

My niece has a 2003 325xi that has a front end clunk. My brother in law has been trying to find the issue. He has changed the strut mounts but the clunk hasn't changed. Had the front end inspected and no one can locate the issue. He told me that while the car was resting on the ground tire still on the car so the weight of the car was on the spring he was able to turn the spring by hand. He said the force he used was moderate at best. He is not a big guy. Any ideas? My experience tells me that there should be no way he should have been able to turn that spring by hand. Help guys.
