Burnt oil smell 94 bmw 740i

I noticed burning oil smell recently and when I popped the hood open there was a bit of smoke but not excessive.. Did oil and filter change recently as well! I did notice what looked like old oil gunk on the valve covers.. Could this be solved by cleaning the vc or what do you guys recommend I do?! Cars runs fine btw
