Upper chain tensioner questions

Hey guys. I know this is on a 540, but it's the same engine. I feel so out of place when I post in the E39 section ;)

I'm going to do the upper timing cover gaskets on the 540 in the next couple weeks because I have to change the coolant pipe o-rings behind the water pump because they're leaking. The cover gaskets are leaking too, and I'll be right there doing this stuff. When looking up the parts, I came across an o-ring for the upper timing chain tensioners #16 in realOEM diagram:

It looks like the kind of o-ring that would go bad and leak in these cars, and I'm not sure if that at all contributes to the vanos rattle that is so common on these M62TUs if it lets oil bleed down or something (I only have experience with the non-vanos M62 on my 7).

The o-ring is cheap, the only thing I'm not sure about is...

1. does this o-ring even matter?

2. is it easy to replace by loosening the tensioner enough to get the old one out and new one in without the mess of dealing with the chain?

What else should I do while I'm in these upper covers?

What tool do you use to align the covers? There is supposed to be some spacer that is placed between the valve cover and timing cover to press the upper cover down into place.

Thanks
