Key fob small proximity

Hi all, been driving new BMs until recently acquired a dream car of mine - an Alpina B10 1998. It's a euro spec car, cloth seats, no cruise etc (may help)

The key is the black rubber type with only two buttons on it. The key fob will only lock the car when you're standing very close to the drivers door. Will not unlock at any further distance.

All the locks work with the actual key.

Additional info, the rear passenger door is locked and cannot be unlocked from the inside, I'm assuming its the dead bolt. That's going to get looked at by my shop.

Also, when I had the vehicle inspected, the inspection report simply said "key 2 not recognized" and when I brought back both of the keys, they told me it was fine.

Maybe those two issues are intertwined with my main one.

I have changed the batteries in the main key and the issue remains.

Also, the car didn't come with manuals, so anyone know what the round button at the top and the rectangle button at the bottom of the key do?

Many thanks.
