Code Reader Issues

I've used 3 different code readers without success. 2 R5's, neither powers up, and the BOA Digital tool from Shogun. The BOA tool powers up and goes to a steady green, but when I try and do a reset on anything but SRS, the red light blinks briefly and the unit goes through its power up routine. SRS reset works fine, although the error comes back, separate issue.

I'm guessing since I'm have issues with all 3, it's a comm problem. Where do I start trying to diagnose communication issues?
